What's The Most Common Toto Asia Debate Doesn't Have To Be As Black And White As You May Think

The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad and was doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for bidet and washlet toilet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto recorded Toto words to ensure that the future generation could read them. Many words were substituted with foreign words. For example, dui, which is Bengali for verandah, was used.

Origins

The early history of Toto which began in 1917, mirrored Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the beginning of its existence, the company manufactured goods to meet demand for new, modern urban housing. It had the first tunnel kilns in the country that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, which helps to increase efficiency and a more consistent production.

In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began expanding overseas in order to take advantage of sales and new markets. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other products of other manufacturers in order to complement its own range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the market share of the company globally.

In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development of household appliances that are water-related. It also redesigned its distribution system to better serve its customers and increase profit. The company implemented a just-in-time approach to supply chain management and used the same method in its sales program. This resulted in a higher level of satisfaction with the customer.

Toto continues to invent toilet technology. The latest toilet, for instance is equipped with a strong tornado flush that is more eco friendly than conventional toilets. Toto also makes use of recycled water in its production process and has a green purchasing policy. Apart from toilets, Toto manufactures faucets and bathtubs, as well as hand dryers that are more energy efficient than conventional models.

The first Toto museum opened in 2015. It has exhibitions on the most iconic products of Toto and their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made of ceramics), the history of plumbing, and other products like bath units. In a separate gallery you can see Toto products sold all over. The museum houses a bathroom with a WASHLET and other toilet innovations.

Before forming Toto the band, members of the group performed session work for various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on albums by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name like Asia, you would expect the group to be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a pretty straight forward rock group. The group began as a quartet and recorded two albums - 1979's self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The band has a varied musical background, but their biggest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, but not without its own set of issues. The record companies put the band under pressure to deliver the top single or they would rescind the album. Luckily for Toto they did and they did it with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their prior experience. Before forming the group, the members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the standard of  the '80s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

The album opens with a strong and pounding sound, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly get their hooks into you. The album also features slow, jazzier tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distorted AOR and sounds like a complete flop, but works wonderfully well.

After Toto IV The band's fortunes turned towards the negative. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band went through various drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as popular as IV. The band was able to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked Toto's final lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

The studio album came out a few months later, and the group embarked on a world-wide tour to promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album called Then and Now. It was the first album in the history of the band that did not include one single track with the word "A" in its title and it included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which limited his singing ability. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia The original Asia members met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be reformed. This lineup, with the exception of Howe (who was working with Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
